In this chapter, demand forecasting methods are considered. At the beginning, the role of demand forecasting in supply chain and operations management is discussed.

  Demand forecasting is an always-evolving practice, with businesses learning as they go. Data science has only recently become readily available to smaller businesses on a . In Spokane County Water Resources in conjunction with the consulting firms Tetra Tech and CDM developed a Water Demand Forecast Model. The model is capable of forecasting demand for numerous water use sectors, at various spatial scales and time horizons.

  The practice of water demand forecasting, however, has been slow to adapt to these changes, and as a result, water suppliers are likely to overestimate future water demand. How can water supply planners develop more realistic projections? The good news is that there are a range of practices for improving forecasts.
